Just bought my first s12 CA20, at first just for parts but figured I may as well try and get it running and enjoy it a bit. We've managed to get the engine running by spraying deodorant into the intake but there's no fuel actually getting to the engine. When turning ignition on there's no fuel pump priming or clicking noise at all so it seems as though there's either no power getting to the pump or the pump is just stuffed. Was thinking about just hard wiring the pump either to a new relay or a switch but just wondering how to tell if its the actual pump that's stuffed not just the wiring? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If everything is lighting up and working, and the engine cranks and fires, then it's likely just your fuel pump fuse or relay:


The fuel pump relay on a AUS delivered Gazelle is a light green relay on the passenger's side of the engine bay. If you don't hear that click when you turn the key to ON, then the fuse or relay is dead (~$15 from an auto store to replace). Check the fuse (under driver's side of dashboard) otherwise it's the relay.


If you hear this relay click but don't hear the pump prime, then it's likely your pump needs replacement (~$100 from any auto store).


 


While the wiring isn't great (you'll note about 14.4 V at the battery drops to ~10.5 V by the time it passes from the battery via the relay and back to the pump) it is unlikely to be the cause of your problems.

Common problem for fuel pumps to fail.  Especially with the age of the vehicle.  james has described the best way to address your symptons.

If your fuel pump has failed, I recommend upgrading to a Walbro 255lph or as a cheaper alternative an S14/S15 fuel pump fits almost perfectly into the cradle.

Had a play around with it today. Started by swapping the relay over which may have been one of the problems but the pump still wouldn't work after that although it was clicking when turned on. Proceeded to take the actual pump out and run wires straight from the battery to it which worked so put it back in and now all good. I'm assuming that the connections had just gone bad from sitting or something but all seems to be working now. Still haven't had it running however as now one of the old brittle fuel lines has a monster leak so now gotta fix that. I suppose that's what you get with 30 year old Nissans! 

That's good to hear. Most likely corroded connections then.  Fuel line is a nice easy fix with a new hose.  Good luck with it.
