Thomas' '86 Mk.1 CA18e/t25 Hatch

Post by daskulthomas »

I have no idea how to start this topic..

Dropped a few words in the Introduce yourself section a few weeks back, suppose I'll repeat myself here.

Last year I had a few K saved up after working night shift for a few months, and I'd never owned a car before. Being surrounded by diverse cars in my area (and an older cousin that took me to the track a few times) I got a taste for semi-vintage japanese tin, and i just wanted something different.

I must confess, I didn't know much about these S12's before I went to look at one 100km's out, but the previous owner had restored the CA18ET that was in it and even upgraded the turbo with a T25 from an S13 with a custom downpipe leading into a full length OEM replaced exhaust to the back. Surely he's done loads more to it; the interior is still immaculate IMO, I'll just dump some photos about now.

Being my first car it took me months to figure out it was leaking massive vacuum out the valve cover. As you can tell it was still running the stock suspension with one of the dampers in the back leaking making it behave funny as well, fast forward 7 months and I've scrambled all sorts of suspension parts together through eBay and an Import shop few miles away.

Let's run through the list.

BC D22 Coilovers (sure ya'll familiar with this one)

Acadiana Sports Car Orphanage 300ZX poly bushings - for the IRS rear end (oh btw it's got IRS and a R200, that's good right?)

S13 Knuckle, Ball joints, Inner & outer steering rack ends (that i later tapered to length of the S12 LCA)

Brand-spanking new 5x114.3 Ichiba S13 lug hubs

Infiniti G50 Q45 Brakes & pads with 300ZX rotors that fit a bit too snug for comfort.

Not pictured above include

HEL Stainless Steel Braking Lines

Superpro poly bushings for Lower Control Arm, Swaybar and End Links respectively

SiX Racing S13 adjustable Tension/Castor Rods.

Why 5 lug? well simply cause I wasn't bright enough to just fly in a hub assembly... might do that next spring and get some new wheels.

Talking about wheels, after hammering out all the old, worn bushings, parts, and replacing/modifying them after treating them to a well deserved lick of hammerite...

The kind folk at Enkei USA had some wheels in stock of similar design with both 4x114.3 / 5x114.3 PCD they would fly over to Europe for me. [s](of course I had to lay down 4 figures beforehand)[/s]

Now to make the S13 Tension rods work you can see I cut a piece out of the existing S12 torsion arm bracket, when I later discovered Matt's CAZMAN unit I headbutted myself as I easily could've fabricated a likewise setup, oh well it's eliminated the bump steer this way too. *shrugs*

That about sums up what I've been busy with past May through July, I'll throw more on here later as i have loads of photos saved up. Hope i can contribute to this tight community you guys got set up here!
