CA20DET powered Gazelle

Post by Candellan »

I'm currently running no front swabar as I've misplaced the long bolts. I have the body mounts and new Poly Pros for them ready to go on.

It got it's first mountain run yesterday and damn it's impressive. I went up to Mt Glorious from Samford (Brissy locals will agree this is a serious climb) with many 30kph corners. I did all bar one 20kph corner in 3rd gear, pulling strongly uphill from just 1000rpm. The poor old Triumph in front of us was ringing it's guts out in 1st and 2nd gears. I've never seen a car do that before from such low revs. Boost peaked at 0.85bar (12psi) and the engine seemed happier afterwards for it, now runnning very smoothly. I do think that's stressing the poor matchsticks, but it sounded happy enough. I think the strength of a well prepped CA20 is better than it looks. The shot peened rods may help there too.

On the way down I really bedded in the Red Stuff pads on the front by coasting all the way down riding the brakes (no engine braking). Gave it a few heavy stops throughout and it felt strong all the way. A bit whiffy by the bottom but no fade at all. Should be great at QR.

Suspension setup is also better than I hoped. Whilst being fairly heavily sprung the damping is perfect at keeping the body roll to a minimum, yet the ride is fairly smooth. Smoother than my Bluey thats for sure and all it has is Kings low and Monroes.

Because I have a scan of the Japaneese booklet that shows the CA18DET came in the last of the S12's I didn't need any mod plate on my car (amazingly). The FMIC is in the area the air-con condensor usually sits so it's still within the bounds of the radiator support panel. The brakes were deemed a nessesary upgrade with the increased power and thus the suspension was also covered to convert to S13 brakes.

Sweet :D
