This section will cover everything related to identifying an S12 based on the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) plate. This plate holds a lot of information about the car it is attached to, but requires some referencing or translating. The VIN plate can be found in the vehicles engine bay, fixed to the firewall on the drivers side of the car (RHD S12) or passenger side (LHD S12).
The chassis version of the S12. TYPE refers to the engine the chassis holds and the rear suspension setup, either 4-Link Coil Axle Type (also referred to as Solid Rear Axle or SRA), or Independent Suspension Semi-Trailing Arm Type (also referred to as Independent Rear Suspension or IRS).
In Japanese S12's, TYPE has no reference to the body shape (coupe/hatch) or model version of the car. In other markets the body type is referenced.
A unique identifying number. This number will also match the Chassis Number stamped into the firewall to the left of the VIN plate.
