Well...my friend Matt now has my Gaz's and is working on them :-)

...BUT...

I bought this!

1985 Nissan Gazelle GL IRS CA18DET 5spd

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image<a%20href=Posted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
so the down low...

Engine/Transmission:

Nissan CA18DET 5spd (CA20 box :-()
no name "T28" turbo...bit dodge i think but it spools ok, bit of lag tho (journal bearing) might change this one day.
R180 open diff (lame)
1 piece 3"tail shaft
Power steering but no aircon yay

Interior:
AF ratio gauge
Boost gauge
dual stage boost controller
Turbo timer
shitty shitty shitty interior lol
aftermarket steering wheel
really cheap gear knob

Exterior:
Very very little amount of rust so far, little spots here and there but nothing drastic. all small spots less than 5c piece
none in the sunroof/usual spots!!! WINNING
Really tacky chrome wheels and original rs-x (I think) rims, on the back but i have the four.
Paint is in pretty good nick overall too. All plastics are great and tailights etc are all great, all chrome is there too.

The engine swap was done by a shop in Nundah brisbane and is engineered :-)

Can i get an LSD for the r180?

so now...."How much?'' i hear you ask,.,,,

Let's just say, cash talks. He said 3.5 firm, i said 2.5 right here, right now. He said ok!!!!!
I still can;t believe it! It's a little laggy and needs a tune, stock ecu so might get a flash tune etc
But other than that I'm super happy!

That's about all the info i know lol If you could tell me anything more like mach 1 or 2 etc that would be greatly appreciated.

Awesome buy!
R180 LSD's are rare & not really the way to go as the shafts tend to snap off inside the diff as they are, let's just say not to big, a kick of the clutch & snap!
R200 fits in its place, but your looking at any thing from $900-$1200 for an LSD R200 & then shafts are $150-200 each. You will need to find or modify your rear diff mount as well due to the R200 being longer. The R180 mount is dog leg shaped & needs to be made straight, bit of choppy choppy weldy weldy required.
I have sold a few R180 on the dato forums, as they are generally a 4:11 ratio & the 1600 boys love them because they are a sh** load lighter than the R200!

Clean up, rego, track/weekender. That's the plan. Although right now i am struggling with the whole diff thing! I have been reading threads all day about CV's and Half shafts etc and I'm more confused now than i was before ha ha.

I've read that the R180 diff was used in WRX's so can I get a WRX diff and slot that in? I WANT LSD!
It's a CA18DET, never gonna be a torque monster, used for the occasional drift but mainly for road/track.
I've read lots on R200 swaps but some say use this drive shaft soime say use that driveshaft etc etc.

H E L P!!!!!

The Subaru option requires machining because of spline differences IIRC, GTi-R Pulsars also ran an R180 with an LSD, but again, I can't remember whats involved.

Cough cough welder cough

The Subaru shafts are even smaller than the nissan R180 due to the front diff sharing the load from what I remember from the research I years ago. It might be cheaper to get an open R200 & fit the lsd guts from a shortnose s13 R200 to a longnose R200, but you will still require R200 CV drive shafts.

or

There are some people who have made the s13 shortnose diff fit in the R200 place (because they are a shitload cheaper) in dato 1600's but I have never heard of anyone trying it in an s12, not to say it cant be done ;)

R200 short diff they are vlsd aren't they? Would be ok for what I want, part time drifter part time street track car.
I'm sure it can't be that hard? Would the axles be bolt up do you think? Have to see what I can find, only downer is the tailshaft would need to be longer I think, I have a one piece custom jobby now.

So i may have spent a bit of coin! Bought a heap of gauges, oil temp, oil pressure, water temp, Tacho, already have boost and air/fuel. Also bought a new pod as the old one was munted lol and some new silicone bends as the piping is very poorly positioned and rubs on everything!

I also bought two SAAS reclineable racing seats, they were on clearance for $189 each 399rrp so thats a bit of a saving, gonna get some s13 rails and make it all work.

All i need now is to sort out the diff and fuel system etc. This build is hopefully going to cost me 5k. That is all. $5K to get on road, reliable and rego'd.

This is the old Pod!!!

Very clean under the plastics, which weren't too bad, gonna give 'em a bit of reco :-)

One for the road :-)

Little bit of an update

I've been working on the piping because a lot of it rubs on EVERYTHING!!! and the original pod filter had so much pressure on it being squished against the headlight that it is crumbled up. Still in progress but here are a few pics. I also has 5 good quality gauges now...oil temp, oil pres, water temp, air/fuel, Boost and a new tacho. Thinking about making a custom thingy to put where the turbo timer is now, in that spot.
Posted ImagePosted Image

Also will this hurt anything? It looks like it's supposed to be there :-/

This is where I want to put the gauges in a line all 5 of them, tilted towards me.

Has the hotpipe rubbed a hole in intself where it goes through the body? Cold pipe on my daily looked like that when I got it, I had to extend the hole, cover with pinchweld and put a joiner around it like you have there.

People seem to forget that engines move

hadn't rubbed all the way through, but it was close! The join will help it flex a little i hope. The whole swap looks very pro...except the piping lol
