Since doing my CA18det conversion and putting the dash back in, i have managed to put up with not having a back light.

But since the GF has moved to a location between a point to point speed camera check, it has become rather annoying and makes me slightly anxious driving at night... i kinda like having my points... and $$.

So i pulled the top of the dash out to access the cluster and realised that there is a globe with a black wire hanging out the back not attached to anything.

I checked the other end of the ILL wires and they seem to be earth... meaning that the 12V supply for them is that black wire.

I assume it goes somewhere near/has something to do with the dimmer, but can't for the life of me feel/see where it is.

If anyone know's where it's supposed to connect to, it'd be most appreciated.

Just make sure when you test it with a test light, that you also test it with the lights switch turned on.

I made that mistake when installing my stereo, the dash lights show as a negative when the lights are off.

ok, had a look at and around the ignition barrel, and cannot find anything that looks like the optical connection!

Pedro, or Dean, seeing you know what it is, could you describe it in detail, or get a photo?

Ok, after talking to dean last night on msn, i realised that, the optic cable is not my issue... Looks like i'm going back to wire tracing ;)

If it's like up here
go to the wreckers
Pay $2 entry
find a gaz
then pull the dash out,
find where your wire goes
then leave.
priceless

the thought had crossed my mind...

but we have them for $1 :thumbsup_anim:

But more than likely, i'll be in a wet cabbin as the windows and doors are often not there, or smashed :s

It must just be one plug that i havent connected...

My issue is that i have the 180 loom behind there too now so following wiring is all that more interesting. Buckets of fun! :s

Have you checked the rheostat (Dimmer)?

Also, do your parkers work? I had the glovebox light short itself out, and it took out the parkers and dash lights.

there's voltage at the dimmer switch when i turn the lights on (it's not there when it's off)

The glove box light shorting it out? :s

Parker lights at the front of the car work.

The lights work at the shifter, the buttons for the heater control (not the backing tho) AC button... door lights all work (but thats a different circuit.

The footwell lights dont light up like they used to when the headlights are turned on too. I havent had a chance to pull the dash out again... hopefully this weekend at some point
